In the cycling community, the quest for a saddle that marries comfort with sustainability is ongoing.
Frame Cycles is a story of collaboration and innovation, sparked by Evan Gray’s vision while attending a bicycle frame-building course in Somerset. With the help of Matthew Macindoe, an Industrial Designer and friend, this vision gradually took shape, culminating in the creation of the FR-1 bike saddle.
What sets the FR-1 apart is not just its functionality as a bike saddle but its approach to materials and production. Handcrafted in Scotland, this product represents a significant departure from traditional saddle materials, opting for cork – a material known for its lightness, durability, and comfort. This choice reflects a broader commitment to reducing reliance on polymer-based materials, aligning with a growing desire to use sustainable alternatives in the cycling world.
The choice of titanium for the saddle’s substructure meets the requirement for combining strength and lightness and underscores the technical expertise behind the FR-1.
Recognition of the FR-1 Saddle’s unique blend of eco-friendliness and design has led to its nomination for The Green Product Award 2024. This acknowledgment highlights the broader significance of the FR-1 beyond its functional role – it symbolises a step forward in the cycling industry’s journey towards sustainability.
